ADVANTAGES TO INDEPENDENT TRAVEL

Most travel programs to Africa offered by tour operates are scheduled group departures. Passengers must choose from prescheduled dates and be willing to travel with a group of strangers. Many find this appealing - equally - many do not.
There are certain advantages to group travel, primarly less costly travel expense. Although this is not always true. For the single traveler or those just looking to socialize the group approach can also be appealing.

East Africa is however unique, visitors here travel specifically for the opportunities to view wildlife in their natural environment and to experience the African culture. It is here that group travel has a very distinct disadvantage. Years of experience in the safari business has taught us that all visitors have specific expectations of Africa, and considering that travel to Africa is an expensive venture, when those expectations are not met, travellers are left disappointed.

Group safaris typically will have 6 to 7 passengers in a vehicle, plus a driver/guide which must do his best to accommodate all. Rarely is that possible, for inevitabily when one or two passengers want to sit and watch elephants, the other five passengers want to move on to look at something else. The driver/guide has little choice but to move on, leaving the elephant loving passengers disappointed and upset. Whenever we do a group departure, this is consistently the one complaint given - reduced opportunity to view or participate in activites as a function of traveling in a group. The other complaint typically is in response to the dynamics of the group.
